Who the heck is a Servant Entrepreneur?
In his 1970 essay titled “The Servant as Leader”, Robert Greenleaf provided quite a succinct and profound definition of who a servant leader is: “The servant leader is a servant first”.
Similarly, I would say that the servant entrepreneur is a servant first. His or her highest priority is solving a particular problem for a specific group of people to the best of his ability. He helps them to close the gap between where they are and where they want to be. He (or she) is selfless and puts the needs and goals of the ones he (or she) serves before his (or her) own. He (or she) understands that it’s not about him (or her) but about them.
Now, this does not mean that he (or she) does not care about profit. Profit is crucial for the survival of any business. It simply means that profit does not come before the needs of the people he serves. He understands and believes that money is merely a byproduct of providing value to that specific group of people.
The servant entrepreneur offers enormous value, elicits trust and has an inner drive to serve first. He (or she) will sometimes go to extremes and do crazy things to provide service or to strengthen the relationship with the ones he serves. He (or she) has a strong brand and always provides value. He (or she) always seeks to improve so as to serve better. He (or she) is credible, has a solid reputation and track record and a horde of raving fans. He (or she) genuinely cares about the ones he (or she) serves.
Servant entrepreneurs are generally happier, proud of what they do and financially successful.
My Story
I have been an entrepreneur for more than 15 years but I only started thinking about building an online business in 2017.
Like most people, I started looking for information on Google and YouTube. Soon, I was sucked in an endless spiral of buying “make money online” courses, tools and apps from so-called gurus. I found out, the hard way, that the internet is littered with shady internet marketers who overhype their sales pages to make you believe that you have found the holy grail to making money online quickly and easily. Later, I realized that these people were only after the money and did not really care for what I was trying to achieve.
I felt cheated and lost.
I started asking myself:
Why is it that others are succeeding and not me?
Where does the problem lie?
I'm not of those who give up easily and so I started thinking hard about it. But it was only much later that I found my answer.
If there are bad guys on the internet, there are also the good guys. I started being successful when I met the goods guys. They are the ones who are honest, transparent and authentic. They didn't sugarcoat things so that I click on some affiliate link or buy some crap product just to make some quick buck.
They did not tell me what the lazy part of my brain wanted to hear: that growing a business online is easy and that I can be successful overnight by buying some push button money making app or software. They told me what I needed to hear to be successful!
They provided valuable guidance and cared for my success. They want to build a long term relationship with their audience. Their objective is to have a strong brand and build a business that will stand the test of time.
I called them Servant Entrepreneurs!
What I believe in?
Money is a byproduct of providing value. As Zig Ziglar said:
"You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
Happiness brings success and not the other way around.
Time is our most valuable asset.
“Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” - Theodore Roosevelt
